My Nerves!!

Well, since our last podcast, I've had people ask me about the nerve condition that I mentioned on the show. So I thought I'd spill my guts and fill you guys in. Here goes... I have pretty bad scoliosis which has progressively gotten worse over the past couple of years. Due to the alignment of my spine, my muscles are becoming out of wack and nerves are beginning to become pinched, causing severe pain (and at times numbness), down my rear and to my toes, especially during running. My backbone makes a pretty C shape in my lower back causing my pelvis to shift wrong and leads to many problems.

My sports medicine doc suggested last year, during my marathon, that I consider stopping running all together. Afterwards, I significantly decreased my mileage and picked up triathlon. The runs for Sprints and Olympics are much shorter distances than I was training before but I still got a great workout with the three sports combined. I was happy with that. However, since my last tri, my body is telling me to stop. It has been highly suggested that I probably shouldn't run anymore due to the impact that it has on my back and overall body alignment. The docs (four to be exact) have suggested pretty aggressive physical therapy for a while so I'm thinking about doing that.

The catch to all of this is this. The physicians that I've seen about this have all been surprised about my physical capabilities. They were even more suprised that I didn't have more problems as a child. They all said that my activities are probably what have kept me in better condition than what was expected due to my scoliosis. They have also said that my nerve issue is going to worsen with age, regardless if I run or not. It will just happen sooner than later if I decide to keep running. So what's kept me healthy all these years is both helping me and harming me. Talk about a catch 22.

I have options though, let me lay them out for you.

1) Do aggressive physical therapy and see if that prolongs the issue.

2) Have back surgery that has more risk involved than a good outcome (this is not even an option for me. I won't do this at this point in my life. Period).

3) Fight through the pain (I'm tough but not that tough).

4) Stop running all together and stick with other, no impact sports. Grrrr....

So, as grim as these options are, I think I'm going with the physical therapy. It sounds like the best option at this point in my life. And who knows, I might get great results from it. I'm going to do more swimming and cycling and keep my running to a minimum for a while and see what comes from that. Who knows, this might be just what I need to get better at swimming, right?

But all in all, I feel thankful. I'm thankful to be alive and healthy. I might have an unaligned body but that isn't keeping me from being an athlete. And I might have more limitations for a while but overall life is good and I just have to remember that everyday. It's great to be alive!!! Okay, I'm off to the pool...

Yo! Rock Climbing...STELLAR!

Put me on a rock because I'm a freakin' spider!!! Okay, so yeah, rock climbing is super hard, but it's super freakin' sweet. If you want to keep your fingers the way they are, then don't rock climb. But if you're ready to use every single muscle in your upper body and back, this is the sport for you. I admit, I didn't have much of a technique since it was my first time so I didn't have the equal usage of my body parts down as most seasoned rock climbers do. I basically pulled myself up the rocks with my arms. It was so cool. I like to think I have a pretty strong upper body and I tend to pull myself whenever I have the chance, so I wasn't surprised by my choice of muscle groups today. But holy cow...talk about a sport that uses so much core. It was amazing!

First, let me explain the climbing lingo to the best of my knowledge. There are levels in rock climbing. 0-1-2-3-4 and 5. Five is basically verticle (a 90 degree angle). Then after 5, it goes into 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, etc. With every increasing decimal, the harder the slope. It goes up to 5.13 or so then it moves onto 5.14a, 5.14b, 5.14c...and so on. I think I have that right. I could be totally wrong, but that's what I got out of it today. Anyway...

We did three runs. The first run was a 5.8 and was the "hardest" of the day. However, I zoomed right up there without a problem. It was so cool! I had a lot of trouble at first trying to find where to begin but I figured it out and had a hoot of a time. Run two was a 5.6 or 5.7, I can't remember. It was pretty easy half way up and then it was literally a climb where you had to have your back to the ground. It was crazy but really cool. I had a bit of trouble with placement on this one but I figured it out and made it to the top with no problem.

Run three...well, run three was a different story. This was supposed to be the easiest of the day, sitting at a 5.5. Basically it was a crack in the rock and we were supposed to climb up it. Just imagine a wall with a crack in it. It was crazy hard. Granted I had no technique for climbing a crack but I was determined to get to the top. It took me FOREVER to figure out how the heck I was supposed to get up it. I stood on the ground for a long time studying the rock. At last, with the help of my instructors and friends, Alberto and Ana, I made it up, slowly but surely. This was by far the hardest run of the day. But it was awesome getting to the top and slapping the carabiner. What a rush!

I think we're going out again for another day of climbing in a couple of weeks. I'll have to report again how that goes. My suggestion to those who have never climbed, go with some friends that know what they're doing and take a chance. It's an incredible time and you learn about yourself and your body while you climb.

Sorry this took me forever to post, I had it as a draft and forgot to post it. Thanks for being patient! I'm off...

Training Schedule

Well, it's time to post what it is that I'm doing for my workouts...at least for this week. I'm keeping it fairly simple it seems. So here's a sneak peak into my world of triathlon. Let me know what you think.

This week is kinda strange but here ya go.

Sunday: 4 mile run (this was supposed to be 6 miles)
Monday: 4.5 mile run

Tuesday: Swim drills and trail run (4 miles)
Wednesday: Bike 11 miles and run 3 miles
Thursday: Run 6 miles
Friday: Off--Traveling away
Saturday: Cross Train--Rock Climbing
Sunday: Off--Traveling home

This isn't my normal routine but this is a fun week for me. This weekend I get to go rock climbing with my rock climbing buddies. I haven't climbed in a really long time so it'll be fun to get out there and learn a few things. I'm really excited! Normally, I would have managed a long ride and a long swim but this should be a nice change.

Next week's workouts will increase the running miles and hopefully get in a couple more bricks. Okay, I'm off...
