I’ve been sick for a little over a week now but I’m improving. I lost my voice around Friday of last week and have been slowly getting it back… very slowly. I turned into a squeek toy for the better part of 4 days. And as you probably could guess, I’m not a very silent person so that’s very difficult for me. As far as training goes, I haven’t ran in about a week. I’m missing it and ready to get back in gear. Yesterday I slowly jogged to my car and I was coughing and out of breath… it was a mere 30 yards from my door. So I might be in trouble. It’s definitely not the time to get out of my training regimen. This is GO TIME and I’ve been sitting on my couch totally thankful for my membership at Blockbuster. Uggg! I think I’m going to give it one more day and be back to my training schedule on Monday. I’m just going to take it easy.

Aside from my illness and lack of training, the weather has been quite atrocious. But as I’ve mentioned before I LOVE running in the weird, awful weather for some reason. I think I’ll be taking that off the list for a week or two though and sticking to the indoor running. I’m not too sure that my lungs can take it. Alas, I carry on… getting back on track and hopefully on my way to more successful running in the upcoming week. Wish me luck.

Here is my schedule for the upcoming week.

Monday--3 miles
Tuesday--3 miles and weights
Wednesday--6 miles
Thursday--3 miles
Friday--Ball exercises
Saturday--12 miles
Sunday--I want to squeeze in a bike ride but who knows with this weather. We'll see.

Okay, I'm off.

Holiday Training

We have exactly ONE week until Christmas. Can you believe it?? Well everyone knows this time of year is the season when training becomes it's most burdensome. I, for one, have been on that track until recently. Last week’s training went pretty well; no real nerve issues to speak of, which is always a bonus in my world. I have a short week at work this week which is really nice, so I should be able to squeeze in an extra long run on Friday. My schedule, once again, is pretty easy this week. I didn’t manage to get to the gym on Sunday for spin, but I did frolic around the park and play Frisbee. It wasn’t quite the exercise I was looking for, but it sure was fun.

As many of you already know, I have recently moved to Plano. Luckily I live in a super neighborhood with TONS of sidewalks and parks, so I can plan all kinds of different routes for training. My recent favorite route makes a perfect rectangle about 1.45 miles in distance. Depending on the day, I take that a few times around and I’m good to go. It’s a nice run, especially since the trees are all lit with Christmas lights along the way.

When I first started running long distance, I “learned” to run in the very cold temperatures, so for some reason, I LOVE to do that. However it hasn’t been too chilly here. It’s been one extreme or the other. Today was bloody hot! Can you imagine, one week before Christmas and its mid 80’s outside. Something is wrong with that!! Anyway, no complaints… all is good.

Lastly, thanks to those of you who have sent me information on yoga. It’s been very helpful. Please keep the advice coming!

Once again, pretty easy week ahead, here’s the schedule:

M: off run, back stretches, ball exercises.
T: 3 miles and stretches
W: 3 miles and weights
R: 3 miles and stretches
F: (normally I would be off, but since I’m on vacation) 6 miles and back stretches
S: ball exercises and cross training with weights
U: 7 miles and stretches

Oh, and one more thing! For those who listen to "In Transit", the next show should be coming out in the next couple of days.

Yikes! It's Been a While

Okay, okay... sorry folks. I've been neglecting my blog haven't I? Well, the good news is that I have been getting ready for my next big race coming up in February, so let me tell you all about it. I will be running the Austin Half Marathon with several other triathlete friends of mine and I'm stoked about it!! If anyone wants to meet up with us there, please feel free to contact me and I'll get you our information. It's going to be a BLAST!

So I have lots of news. First, the City of Rome Marathon has been taken off the list of possibilities to run this season. Cara, my friend and podcast partner, has moved to Connecticut and won't be able to get that time off of work, so we have chosen another marathon in the states where it's more conducive to our schedules. Ladies and gentlemen, I announce to you, God willing and health intact, that I will be running the Charlottesville, Virginia Marathon 2007. YEA!!! And though Cara has moved to CT, we will still be doing the show. Luckily for us, the wonderful world of technology has provided us with a means to record over the net. It's really amazing actually. I just love electronics. Speaking of, and total side-note, have you ever been to a Frye's?? Oh my goodness, that place is amazing! Every single electronic you could ever imagine in ONE store the size of a Super Wal-Mart. But I digress...

Anyway, here's a little of what I've been up to since my last entry a month and a half ago. My new job is going really well, thankfully. And since I now live so close to my job, I have much more time to train. GREAT BIG YEA!! And I have been consistently running but I haven't been following the plan (Hal Higdon's) like I should. I haven't been increasing my miles as much as I should, so I've already fallen behind on my schedule. I just need to get in gear and buckle down to my plan. GRRR!!!!!

AND! Guess what?!?! You're not going to believe this. I have a person who said they would coach me with swimming! Yes, Yes, I know you're probably dying right now.... well, maybe not, but I surely am excited. I mean, I hate it still, but at least this way, I might get better and I might start liking it. So I'm pumped. But I won't start that until probably March or so.

Okay, man, so much news! I started seeing a wellness coach on Wednesday mornings and she helps me with stretching and upper body strengthening. The stretching is a therapeutic tool for my back, which is still having frequent painful episodes. But I think if I stick to my stretching exercises, then I will improve.... well, I'm hoping anyway. I am just going to listen to my body and see what it tells me. If I have to stop running, I have to stop running. I've come to face that fact. It's not pretty, but it's there, so I have to recognize it. Alas, I continue on in the meantime. My wellness coach has also suggested that I do yoga daily for 15 minutes. So I'm looking for any advice on yoga DVD's if anyone has any to suggest, please let me know. And keep in mind that I am a beginner, so nothin' too fancy-shmancy!

Again, sorry for such a long delay in posting but I've just been crazy lately! Please keep in touch via phone or email. And I assure you, I'll keep you posted on my training.

This week's schedule is pretty easy:
M--off running, back stretches
T--3 miles, back stretches, and ball exercises
W--3 miles, back stretches
R--3 miles, back stretches
F--off running, back stretches
S--6 miles, back stretches, and ball exercises
U--cross train (think I'm going to spin at the gym for an hour and do my ball exercises).

My new pump up music is TECHNO, baby!! Classical music made into techno is the most amazing running music because it's got such an amazing beat, you feel like you're soaring with every step. I love it! Okay, okay... I'm done. Catch ya in a few days! PHEW... that was a workout!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://epitri.blogspot.com/2006/12/yikes-its-been-while.html' title='Yikes! For those of you who don't know, I have nerve issue in my back caused by scoliosis. It's slowing me some this season but I'm keeping my spirits up! I offically have 5 months and a little over a week until my marathon of choice (City of Rome Marathon). That should be enough time to get into the swing of things again.

I feel extremely lucky to be surrounded and encouraged by real athletes! Some folks who are embarking on one of the biggest challenges of their life and others who are just starting out in the world of athletics. Both groups, elite and beginners, are equally encouraging. Through the tricast that Cara and I produce, I have met so many people who honestly make my training life a lot easier. So, here's to you! If you're reading this, you're more than likely one who keeps me running through the pain and keeps a smile on my face as I jam out to my latest tunes on my MP3.

Today in my earbuds, I listened to Aerosmith! How can you not love this sport?!?! I'm about to really bump up the miles in the next couple of weeks hopefully, so I'll keep you posted on how things are going.

Cheers

Voicemails

Hey everyone! It's Fall, the weather is beautiful, and it's a wonderful close to Triathlon season (and a welcome thought to steer clear of the pool for a while).

I've mentioned before about my scoliosis resulting in some nerve damage in my back. Last week was pretty bad for me and I couldn't do to much working out. Conversely, this week has been awesome!! Since it is September, I have started my long distance training for running. Last night I ran 4.5 miles, which isn't too far, but I felt like running more than the required 3. I'm using Hal Higdon's 18 week marathon training plan this year. It seems very similar to the plan I've used in the past so I think it will be useful. I'm extending the plan to 21 weeks since I like to take it easy around Christmas and I am planning the marathon to be in March rather than February. I haven't settled on a marathon yet though and have been considering many. I just can't decide. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I want a fast course!

This week I have the "Underground In Transit Triathlon". I'm super excited about that; it should be fun and very casual. If you're interested in knowing more about that, CLICK HERE!!

Okay, I'm off...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://epitri.blogspot.com/2006/09/marathon-season-i-love-you.html' title='Marathon Season... So I thought I'd spill my guts and fill you guys in. Here goes... I have pretty bad scoliosis which has progressively gotten worse over the past couple of years. Due to the alignment of my spine, my muscles are becoming out of wack and nerves are beginning to become pinched, causing severe pain (and at times numbness), down my rear and to my toes, especially during running. My backbone makes a pretty C shape in my lower back causing my pelvis to shift wrong and leads to many problems.

My sports medicine doc suggested last year, during my marathon, that I consider stopping running all together. Afterwards, I significantly decreased my mileage and picked up triathlon. The runs for Sprints and Olympics are much shorter distances than I was training before but I still got a great workout with the three sports combined. I was happy with that. However, since my last tri, my body is telling me to stop. It has been highly suggested that I probably shouldn't run anymore due to the impact that it has on my back and overall body alignment. The docs (four to be exact) have suggested pretty aggressive physical therapy for a while so I'm thinking about doing that.

The catch to all of this is this. The physicians that I've seen about this have all been surprised about my physical capabilities. They were even more suprised that I didn't have more problems as a child. They all said that my activities are probably what have kept me in better condition than what was expected due to my scoliosis. They have also said that my nerve issue is going to worsen with age, regardless if I run or not. It will just happen sooner than later if I decide to keep running. So what's kept me healthy all these years is both helping me and harming me. Talk about a catch 22.

I have options though, let me lay them out for you.

1) Do aggressive physical therapy and see if that prolongs the issue.

2) Have back surgery that has more risk involved than a good outcome (this is not even an option for me. I won't do this at this point in my life. Period).

3) Fight through the pain (I'm tough but not that tough).

4) Stop running all together and stick with other, no impact sports. Grrrr....

So, as grim as these options are, I think I'm going with the physical therapy. It sounds like the best option at this point in my life. And who knows, I might get great results from it. I'm going to do more swimming and cycling and keep my running to a minimum for a while and see what comes from that. Who knows, this might be just what I need to get better at swimming, right?

But all in all, I feel thankful. I'm thankful to be alive and healthy. I might have an unaligned body but that isn't keeping me from being an athlete. And I might have more limitations for a while but overall life is good and I just have to remember that everyday. It's great to be alive!!! Okay, I'm off to the pool...

Oh Happy Day! Rock Climbing...STELLAR!

Put me on a rock because I'm a freakin' spider!!! Okay, so yeah, rock climbing is super hard, but it's super freakin' sweet. If you want to keep your fingers the way they are, then don't rock climb. But if you're ready to use every single muscle in your upper body and back, this is the sport for you. I admit, I didn't have much of a technique since it was my first time so I didn't have the equal usage of my body parts down as most seasoned rock climbers do. I basically pulled myself up the rocks with my arms. It was so cool. I like to think I have a pretty strong upper body and I tend to pull myself whenever I have the chance, so I wasn't surprised by my choice of muscle groups today. But holy cow...talk about a sport that uses so much core. It was amazing!

First, let me explain the climbing lingo to the best of my knowledge. There are levels in rock climbing. 0-1-2-3-4 and 5. Five is basically verticle (a 90 degree angle). Then after 5, it goes into 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, etc. With every increasing decimal, the harder the slope. It goes up to 5.13 or so then it moves onto 5.14a, 5.14b, 5.14c...and so on. I think I have that right. I could be totally wrong, but that's what I got out of it today. Anyway...

We did three runs. The first run was a 5.8 and was the "hardest" of the day. However, I zoomed right up there without a problem. It was so cool! I had a lot of trouble at first trying to find where to begin but I figured it out and had a hoot of a time. Run two was a 5.6 or 5.7, I can't remember. It was pretty easy half way up and then it was literally a climb where you had to have your back to the ground. It was crazy but really cool. I had a bit of trouble with placement on this one but I figured it out and made it to the top with no problem.

Run three...well, run three was a different story. This was supposed to be the easiest of the day, sitting at a 5.5. Basically it was a crack in the rock and we were supposed to climb up it. Just imagine a wall with a crack in it. It was crazy hard. Granted I had no technique for climbing a crack but I was determined to get to the top. It took me FOREVER to figure out how the heck I was supposed to get up it. I stood on the ground for a long time studying the rock. At last, with the help of my instructors and friends, Alberto and Ana, I made it up, slowly but surely. This was by far the hardest run of the day. But it was awesome getting to the top and slapping the carabiner. What a rush!

I think we're going out again for another day of climbing in a couple of weeks. I'll have to report again how that goes. My suggestion to those who have never climbed, go with some friends that know what they're doing and take a chance. It's an incredible time and you learn about yourself and your body while you climb.

Sorry this took me forever to post, I had it as a draft and forgot to post it. I'm keeping it fairly simple it seems. So here's a sneak peak into my world of triathlon. Let me know what you think.

This week is kinda strange but here ya go.

Sunday: 4 mile run (this was supposed to be 6 miles)
Monday: 4.5 mile run
Tuesday: Swim drills and trail run (4 miles)
Wednesday: Bike 11 miles and run 3 miles
Thursday: Run 6 miles
Friday: Off--Traveling away
Saturday: Cross Train--Rock Climbing
Sunday: Off--Traveling home

This isn't my normal routine but this is a fun week for me. This weekend I get to go rock climbing with my rock climbing buddies. I haven't climbed in a really long time so it'll be fun to get out there and learn a few things. I'm really excited! Normally, I would have managed a long ride and a long swim but this should be a nice change.

Next week's workouts will increase the running miles and hopefully get in a couple more bricks. Okay, I'm off...

It's H-O-T hot outside, folks!!

So as I've mentioned before, my running has to increase due to marathon training right around the corner. Though I'm still keeping up my tri activities, I am making room for longer runs. For instance, I am still doing bricks until the season is over, but I'm just adding more miles onto the run part. So that's that.

Yesterday I went out for a 6 miler; but without really thinking, I managed to schedule my run at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. And here in Texas guys, it gets really hot. It was around a hundred degrees I'm guessing and I was feeling every drop of sun. My 6 miler ended up being a 4 miler with a nice stop at the dam at the half way point. So note to self: Don't schedule your run in the middle of the day when it's scheduled to be a really HOT day. Aside from the heat, it was a beautiful day. The sun was out, the birds were chirping, and there were fishermen all along the river (some were in the river). I think tonight I'll make my way to the trail...but it will be when the sun goes down.

Happy trails!

Self Supported Triathlon

Okay, well here's the thing: Cara and I just finished a tri last weekend and we're ready for another. BUT, and that's a big "but", we want to go somewhere for our next one. Since we've spent so much money on our recent vacations, we're hesitant to spent up to a hundred dollars on our next race. Sooooo, we're thinking about doing a self supported race in a cool location. I think it would be really cool to go to Colorado and do a race and maybe call it "In Transit Triathlon". What do you think?? I'm loving it. That way we get travel and triathlon but on our own schedule. Unfortunately there are no races in the Colorado area when we were available to do one. We're thinking about August...who's going with us??!!??!!??!!

I've got the bug, the tri bug that is. I'm gettin' it pretty bad too. I feel like I should get another tri under my belt pretty soon. I'm feeling the tri fever all around me. People like Powerful Peggy and Triboomer are keeping me motivated so much that I feel like I should be in the water, on my bike, or on the pavement all of the time. But not in a bad way, I'm totally pumped! September is just around the corner and I know that marathon training is coming up soon so I'd like to get more tri training in before the season starts. Gosh, life is good. I just love this sport. And I might not be the best but I love it.

I'm planning on doing a 15K pretty soon but it's the same day as a bike rally so I'm kind of torn. Awwww...who cares...it's great to be alive!!!

Grand Canyon Trip

The Colorado River

This is one our campsites on the trip. I'm alive and well and back in the great state of Texas. I'll cut to the chase and let you know how my race went. Here are my results and thoughts.

Overall Age Group: 12 out of 14
Thoughts: I didn't want to be last and I wasn't. Phew!!

Swim: 28:11
Thoughts: Yea!!! I beat my swim goal by several minutes. I still have much more improvement to conquer but I'm slowly getting there! I don't feel as discouraged anymore but I know I have much more room for improving my swim technique. Don't get me started, I could go on and on about this topic as you know.

T1: 1:59
Thoughts: Geeeez!! This is such a major improvement from my last tri. I didn't talk and I got down to business. I felt really off balance after the swim so I was suprised to see my time was under two minutes. I was also suprised to see several people walking through their transitions.

Bike: 44:48
Thoughts: I knew during my bike that I was going really slow. I was having an extremely hard time breathing. I truly felt as though I was breathing through a straw. My goal for this part of the race was between 30 and 45 minutes but I really thought I would have finished long before I did. I was a little disappointed on this time but that's okay, training will continue.

T2: 1:46
Thoughts: Hello!! Once again, major improvement from last tri.

Run: 37:19
Thoughts: Whoa. During the swim and run I knew I was having a hard time with the altitude but running is my thing and I felt really relaxed and really good. So seeing this time for a 5K was extremely disappointing to me. I walked for about 15 seconds when I got a drink of water but the rest of the time I ran. My breathing felt under control finally but I guess my body was moving slower than I realized. My final thoughts on this is that I felt good about it during the race and that's all that matters. Sure it's a little disappointing but once again, training will continue.

Overall: 1:54:01
Thoughts: My overall time was of course longer than I was expecting. I don't know if I was psyching myself out about the altitude or if it really was playing a factor in my performance. The race was really flat and it was BY FAR the most relaxed event that I've ever attended, as far as the rules and such. Transition was first come, first served, and it never closed before the race. We were free to go in and out as we wished, which kind of bothered me but it was also kind of nice. Everyone there was really nice and I met some super nice people. I have a feeling that if this race was done at a lower altitude that I would have had shorter times. Isn't it funny how we train so hard to finish the race as fast as we can? You'd think that we'd want to make it last as long as possible considering how much work we've put into it. It's just funny to think about.

Anyway, overall the race was so much fun. The full race report will be on the next In Transit show. It should be out soon! If you listen to the show and want to leave a voice mail about whatever you want, feel free to call our In Transit phone line and leave up to a two minute long message. 920.482.4822. We'd love to hear from you!

Here are some pictures from the day before and race day! Enjoy!!

Pre-race hydration. I'm doing the Mountain Man sprint in Flagstaff, AZ. I was feeling pretty good about the race until yesterday. Cara, Triboomer, and I went for a short open water swim (600 meters) and a very short sub mile run. The swim wasn't too, too bad but on the run I felt out of energy and had to walk some of the distance. I have no idea what could have caused this but I was freaking out afterwards. I felt like a wimp, not a triathlete about to embark on a race. But on my way home, I realized that I was already wearing my running gear, I had my MP3 player with me (loaded full of stellar tunes), and my running trail was before I hit my exit to go to my house. Last minute, I decided to hit the running trail and go for a run. SUCCESS!! For some reason, my energy was up, my legs weren't tired, and my tunes were blaring. I ran about 2.5 miles and I felt good...really good!

Let me get this straight. Running is by far my best sport of the three so when I couldn't run a mile yesterday I was trippin'. So after my recovery run, my confidence is back. Now all I have to do is survive the swim which I think is completely possible. It might not be pretty but by golly, I'm gonna do it!!

Here's some pre-race information:
Swim: 700 meters
Bike: 18 K
Run: 5 K

My thoughts are:
1) I can do this. I've done much more difficult races than this one. Go, go, go!
2) Decrease my transition times by not talking and unstrapping my shoes prior to dismount.
3) I'm a little concerned with the altitude difference. It's roughly a 6,500 foot difference.
4) I'm also a little nervous about camping out the night before. Are we crazy??
5) It's been a while since I've been in the water with a hundred other people elbowing, punching, and kicking me. Since this is my weakest sport, those factors DO play a role in my anxiety.
6) I'm really excited to see Arizona!
7) The race course looks pretty flat for the most part, with the exception of the uphill swim. =)
8) I can do this, I've done this, I can do it again...but better! Go, go, go!!! Don't freak out!!!

I know there are several other races happening this Sunday. So for those of you picking up race packets, GOOD LUCK!!! Swim, Bike, Run your heart out! Okay, I'm off...

Show 7

It's up and ready for your listening pleasure! Long weekends should call for long workouts; however, it never seems to work out that way. I have been working out but I definitely planned on working out more or at least longer. It has been so bloody hot here in Arkansas. Yeah, it's not as hot as Texas, but the humidity here is MURDER!! I still got out there and did it but WOW do I sweat. I have managed to get the workouts in but getting away from home always screws up my workout schedule. The great thing is that I get to run or ride in new spots so the adventure is always nice. And Arkansas certainly is beautiful.

Yesterday was Independence Day so I stayed busy traveling and hanging out with family. It was really great. Everything went well until I decided to eat a piece of cake. I have an allergy to nuts and nine times out of ten there are nuts or nut oils in any kind of dessert. I ALWAYS, ALWAYS ask, or read the box if I'm able to, or just avoid the food all together. However, yesterday, for some strange reason I failed to take the proper care that I usually do. Naturally, the cake that was used contained modified foods that were produced in nut factories. Geeeez!!! Anyway, I ended up laying on my nieces bed just a few moments after my epinephrine shot. I actually felt better a few minutes later, I just HATE having the after-shot shakes and headache. But as the day continued and the rain subsided, the 4th ended up being great! Great food, great people, great fireworks! I just love the feeling of Independence Day! What a great feeling to be an American! So here's a shout out to all those who serve in the United States military and Reserve forces both active and retired. Thank you for all you do and for all you have done for our country!! Happy 4th of July everyone! Now get on your bike and ride!!!!!! I'm off...

If you don't succeed, tri, tri again...

Well, this past Tuesday was quite interesting. Cara and I did our normal Tuesday open water swim and trail run, except this time we had company. Jetpack (Tyler) from New Jersey came to Texas for a training visit and he met up with us at the lake. He's a fellow Triscooper. Lucky for me, he gave me some new pointers on my swim technique that I'm very excited to try out. I actually started implementing them in the water on Tuesday and felt a major difference in my energy conservation. It seems as though I was keeping my head poised out of the water when I would turn for air. He told me to rotate my body rather than my head and that seemed to work really well. I've read that in so many books but I guess its much easier to understand when someone is there instructing you. So, Jetpack, if you read this, thanks. You've given me a whole new reason to get back in the water...I have a ray of hope to make it through another race. Just when I was really giving up on the swim idea, he gave me really great advice. So this week's lesson: If you don't succeed, tri, tri again!!! You'll get there; it just takes lots and lots of practice. Not just practice but practice the right way, with good techniques and even better spirits!!!

Other than that, work outs are as scheduled. I'm going to Arkansas for the holiday weekend and plan on taking my bike, hopefully. So I should get some good rides and runs in while I'm there. We're going to the lake on the 4th I think, so there's an open water swim calling my name. Yea!! My future's so bright, I gotta wear shades!! I'm off...

Here's a picture of Me, Cara, and Jetpack after our workout. We went to Big Buck Steakhouse for an after workout beer and burger. I only ran but I realized this weekend how theraputic running is for me. I added some abnormal running music to my MP3 and took off. I just zoned out and ran! Some of the newest, unusual featured songs on my MP3 this weekend were: Ella Fitzgeral, Aretha Franklin, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Bach, Rossini, and Beethoven. Yes, I know, those aren't your usual running tunes, but for some reason they really suited me this weekend. I completely organized my thoughts while running on my old trail that I miss so much. The days this weekend were perfect, a little hot, but perfect. I loved the energy I got when "Natural Woman" was playing in my headphones. And of course I had to bump it up a notch when "William Tell Overture" came on. One great thing about this sport is you get to have "you" time, which is so important to one's health. So running is definitely a good thing. Looks like I have an open water swim and run scheduled for tomorrow. Be sure and check out our SHOW 6! It's a doozey! Okay, I'm off...

Back to Bricks

Well, vacation is over and bricks are back in my life again! That's a good thing I think; I've missed the regular routine that I've been neglecting recently. This afternoon I did an open water swim and trail run. I've done many trail hikes in my day but never a run so it was a nice change of pace from the big city. Being in nature is one of my favorite things and today was no exception. As you'll hear from show 6, I'm trying to focus more on the strengths of my sporting (cycling and running) and less on the weaknesses (swimming). I guess I'm already aware of the fact that I'm not the world's best swimmer and I'm okay with that. SO, I've decided to try to improve and do what I can, the best I can. What more can a girl do?! I feel that it's hindering my fun factor of the sport and I don't want to do that so I'm going to work on new focuses: my strengths. =)

I'm actually considering joining my old running team again; they've recently started pre-season training. I received an email from one of my teammates this week asking if I was interested. I ran a marathon with them and I found them to be extremely motivational and just plain ol' cool. I really enjoy the sport and I never felt more fit than when I was with that team. Sooo, I think I'm going to increase my running again and consider doing more long distance races in the future. Just a thought to toss around! Well, I think that's it for now, I'm off...

A little more about the trip and then I swear I'll move on to Tri

This week's podcast is a special edition all about our trip overseas. Don't forget to visit our "In Transit" website at: www.intransitduo.com for the show or you can subscribe to the show through Itunes. Hope you enjoy!

This is me standing on the edge of the Aegean Sea in Mykonos, Greece. What a gorgeous country.

Well, there's really not too much to say about our voyage on Mykonos, except there were lots of tourists and the streets were very labyrinth and somewhat confusing. The entire country of Greece is really, really beautiful. I just can't even begin to explain the blueness of the water; I couldn't pass up the photo-op at the edge.

Here I am, leaning on a camel in Cappadoccia, Turkey.

As I've said before, Cappadoccia was the most amazing part of the trip for me. This shot was taken on the first day of hiking through valley. We came across a camel along the journey and luckily he was nice enough to allow me to have a picture with him.

The most relaxed I've been in a while.

This is me sporting my happy face after a glorious Turkish bath in Selcuk. This was also taken shortly before I got my oil massage so you can imagine how comatose I was after that! That'll be the day I remember after a hard workout. My expectations were met and exceeded in Turkey. Contrary to most of my family's thoughts about the safety of Turkey, I never once felt in danger or scared. The Turks were extremely friendly and willing to help out Americans however possible. I haven't mentioned that my travel buddies were 3 of my friends, Cara, of course, and two other friends from Iowa, Mary and Deb.

This picture is of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. I took this shot from the ferry as we were headed over to the Asian side of Istanbul.

Most Muslim mosques have either 1, 2, or 4 of the pillars that you see in the picture. The Blue Mosque is the only mosque in the world to have 6 and Mecca is the only one to have 7. It stands across the way from the Church Hagia Sophia, which is a gorgeous mosque a couple of hundred yards away and sports only 4 of the pillars. If you ever plan on going to Istanbul, prepare for prayer times 5 times a day starting at 4:20 in the freakin' morning. After a while you don't even hear the incredibly loud speakers with the cantor, but it takes some getting used to.

This is me standing in front of the ever-famous Parthenon in Athens.

People, including myself, often get the Acropolis and the Parthenon mixed up. But to set the record straight, the Acropolis is the actual hill on which the Parthenon sits. And let me tell you, it's quite a hike up that steep hill but well worth the view of the beautiful city of Athens. I kept getting the feeling that I was standing on such a major part of history and that's a pretty dang good feeling. It was breathtaking to be at the actual location that I've only read about in my lifetime. Fortunately we arrived at the Parthenon about an hour before it closed. I say that's fortunate because there were hardly any people there and I got some amazing shots of the structure without the spectators. It's a must see for travelers but don't plan on spending the whole day there; it doesn't take that long to visit the ancient ruins.

Okay, that's all for now. I'll post some more later!

Back in the U.S. of A.

What a relief!! I'm back in the wonderful USA! It was the most amazing trip ever and I wouldn't change anything about it but it sure was nice to get back on American soil. Here's the order of locations from the trip.

While in Turkey: Istanbul-->Cappadoccia-->Selcuk / Ephesus / Pamukkale / Izmir
While in Greece: Samos-->Mykonos-->Santorini-->Athens

This is my favorite shot from the hot air balloon ride the we took in Cappadoccia, Turkey. It was such an amazing sunrise from the sky.

Cappadoccia was by far my favorite location of the entire trip. The land was amazing, the people were so kind, and the food was to die for. Everything about Cappadoccia was well worth the extra lira to get there. We hiked through the Red Valley and various other places. I managed to keep my calories burned while treking through the lands.

This picture was taken in Pamukkale, Turkey at the Calcium Springs. It looks like snow but that's acutally blinding, white calcium.
I had no idea that there was a place like this on God's green Earth. It truly was a mountain formed of calcuim with so many levels and wading pools. The calcium actually starts as a gel and over a short time in the air and sun, it begins to harden and form the hard stuff that you see here in the picture. We started our barefooted hike at the top of the mountain and went down to the middle. Then of course we had to hike back up, which got very hard on the feet, but was well worth the journey.

Now it wouldn't be a trip to Santorini, Greece without a donkey ride up an amazingly steep mountain!

This donkey ride was taken just after we hiked up the Volcano that formed the island of Santorini. I actually stood in the largest volcano crater in the world! It was hard to wrap my head around because it didn't seem that large while we were in it. However, when I actually saw the crater from the top of another mountain nearby; it was absolutely huge!!

Out of Sorts but Back on Track

Hello again. I've been out of touch for a few days but now I'm back in business! I've been feeling a bit under the weather but much better now. My workouts the past few days have been pretty much consisted of running. I need to start thinking tri-style and go for a more regimented schedule of workouts. My workouts lately have been so scattered and unplanned, which is very unlike me.

I attended the "Girls Night Out--Tri Style" event at Richardson's Bike Mart last night and learned a few things. The major highlights of the event are on Show 3 of the tri-cast. It was pretty cool. Show 3 editing is coming up this evening and Cara and I are going for another run. I plan on putting more pics up soon but these are the ones that I've found to be the most recent photos of me. I just need to become more blogger savvy. Okay, I'm off...

Me and some friends hanging out after my last tri.

Post Race Blues...and Reds

Okay, so the race is over and the results are in. I have both good news and bad news. Good news first (the reds): 1) I didn't drown 2) I substantially decreased my transition times 3) I hit my bike goal 4) and I finished the race with energy to spare!!! I'm proud of myself. The course was extremely fun and the triathletes were great. I felt pumped the entire time!

The bad news (the Blues): 1) my swim time wasn't so good, however, I did feel like I was being a bit held up by the swimmers in front of me. Don't get me wrong, I'm by no means a great swimmer, but I think I could've gotten a faster time if I would've categorized myself more accurately. 2) I think I talked too much on the run and decreased my run time a bit too much. Like I said, the race was fun and I had a lot of energy. So I was talking to racers throughout the entire race. One guy was walking and I told him to follow me so we could talk to the finish. He ended up running the rest of the way with me, which was at least 2.5 miles. Way to go, Peter!! I think that probably slowed my time a smidge but it was worth getting to know a fellow triathlete. That's one of the best parts about racing in my opinion.

So, my run time wasn't as good as I was hoping but I was still stoked at the finish line and proud of my new-found-friend for finishing with a bang!! I think I'll focus on the positives of this first race of the season and try to improve on my shortcomings for the next race.

Cara and I are recording our second show this evening and also going for a 5 mile run. I took yesterday off from exercising so I'm ready to get going again!! I felt a little nervous looking at the gigantic pool. But, I feel excited to finally get going for the season!! I have to get to sleep early tonight; it looks like I'll be waking up at 4:15 tomorrow morning. I'll post my race times tomorrow! It's a 400M swim; 15 mile bike; and a 5K run. After several days of debate over a title, we've finally come to a conclusion that encompasses our potpourri of ideas. Alas...we are: "In Transit: Two Triathletes take on the World." Eh, eh, what do you think??? Good huh?? We love it! It's going to be about tri's, of course, but also about other things going on in our lives, like travel, sports, adventures, etc. We recorded our first cast during our brick on Wednesday. It turned out pretty good I think. We have to work on some technical issues and hardware but we're getting it down pretty well.

Speaking of our brick. It went really well. An easy 25 miler on the bike and a 20 minute run. I was still feeling pretty good at the end of the run, so that's great news. I love that jello-like feeling in the transition from bike to ground. If you've ever done that transition, you know what I'm talking about. Ah, it's good to be in training!! I'm still feeling pumped!! This weekend I have a bike rally then I plan on open water swimming if we're allowed in the lake this early in the season. The rally should be a lot of fun!! Okay, I'll catch you on the flip side. I'm off...

One brick at a time

Yeah Baby!! I completed my first brick!! It was hard but I'm so glad that I did it. It was nice being able to flop around in the pool in semi-privacy. I decided at the last minute to not time myself and just make my goal a completion rather than a time. So, that's what I did. I didn't kill myself but I pushed myself. And the run was a nice little folow up. Overall a good workout. I felt powerful.

Tonight is my second brick; my first with Tricoup. We are tossing around the idea of starting a podcast soon. We need to think of a cool, catchy name though. Any suggestions?? Tonight during our workout, we are going to attempt to record something. We're excited and I think it'll give our workouts a new twist of excitment. I'll let you know how it goes.

Brick it up...

Okay, so here it is, two weeks until my first tri of the season and I have yet to enter the pool. I'm avoiding my mortal enemy, my personal foe, the water. I had a 5K race last Sunday and my time totally sucked. If anything, my running is my best sport, but it seems as if I'm just walking along lately. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm down-right neglecting my training schedule. Yeah, I think that is it. Anyway, I'm doing a brick workout tonight and one tomorrow with Tricoup. 800M swim/25 minute run tonight and 25 mile bike/ 20 minute run tomorrow. I'm still pumped which is a good thing!! I just have to, have to, have to get in the water, ASAP. I have a terrible tendency to go, go, go, complete my goal, and crash...hard. I've ran a few races since then but I haven't been stoked about it for some time now. By the suggestion of my friend "Tricoup", I've been listening to podcasts to lift my morale. My motivation has actually increased and I'm back on the road and in the pool. And let me tell you, the pool is my worst enemy. I'm not the best speed swimmer as I'm sure my blogs will allude. So, I'm starting this blog with the hope that I will keep my motivation going.
